Our vision
A more sustainable and equitable food system.
We believe everyone deserves access to the basic resources they need to thrive — especially when those same resources are being thrown away by the billions.
That's why we're building smarter systems to make sharing surplus simple, scalable, and community-powered.

The problem
Over 120 billion meals are wasted every year.
All the while, at least 47 million Americans experience food insecurity. If we rescued even 7% of the food that goes to waste every year in America, we could close the 9.1 billion meal gap.
Our story
From a student's meal swipes to a national movement
In 2016, Drexel student Evan Ehlers used extra meal swipes to buy and give away meals in Philadelphia. He saw that the real barrier wasn't food supply, but access.
That insight sparked Sharing Excess. Today, we've redistributed over 200 million meals and are building the infrastructure to efficiently redistribute surplus food at scale.

What makes us different?
We make it easy for businesses to donate.
At Sharing Excess, we focus on the logistical barriers that keep good food from reaching people. Our agile, tech-enabled model makes it easy for businesses to donate fresh food regularly — while we handle the transportation, coordination, delivery, and everything in between.
We partner with food businesses and food banks alike, acting as the agile connector that keeps perfectly good food moving while it's still fresh. By cutting costs, tracking impact, and reducing waste, we make it a win for people, the planet, and our partners.
